PNR114 Pharmacology for Practical Nursing
This course introduces the student to basic principles of pharmacology and medication calculation. A strong emphasis is placed on identifying the practical, legal, and scientific principles regarding the safe administration of medications. Course topics include: historical perspectives of pharmacology; drug nomenclature and classification systems; drug development, approval and regulation; pharmacokinetics; pharmacodynamics; pharmacotherapeutics; and the use of the nursing process for the safe and effective administration of medications. This course also utilizes evidence-based knowledge and concepts pertaining to sensitivity to age, gender, culture, race, health disparities, socioeconomic status, and spirituality as part of the medication administration process. Emphasis is placed on drug calculations in conjunction with the nurse's role in the delivery and maintenance of safe and efficient drug administration. Different drug calculation processes and practices will be interwoven throughout the course content.
