BIO107 Genetics and the Scientists Who Unlocked the Secrets of DNA

This course covers scientific discoveries that have changed the world and impacted society in many great ways. Students will explore who gets credit for these amazing breakthroughs and discuss several major themes in Biology that have led to new technologies, medications, and applications, with a focus on DNA, chromosomes, genes and heredity. While learning the fundamentals of these scientific principles, students will explore the historical context of the discoveries and scientists that made these discoveries possible. The drama-filled lives of famous scientists including: Mendel, McClintock, Morgan, Crick, Watson, Franklin, Pauling and others will be explored. Some of the major technical advances that have occurred in the 21st century such as cloning, the human genome project and CRISPR may be discussed. This is a non-majors science course that meets for 3 hours of lecture per week and fulfills open, liberal arts and non-laboratory science electives.
